Installation Instructions for Tonky Wall Stickers

Intro

This information is intended to aid in the installation of your Tonky Wall Sticker. We strongly recommend careful consideration of the entire section. Even the handiest of customers will benefit. As with any change to home or office, careful preparation will ensure a flawless installation. Be confident and make sure the sticker’s sticky side never folds onto itself. For smaller stickers there is very little that can muddle the results, for larger designs, an extra set of hands is the key to success.
We make the stickers from adhesive sign vinyl, a user friendly a material. Each sticker is sandwiched between two sheets of material, one an opaque backing paper and the other a translucent application tape. The application tape is slightly tacky so it holds onto the sticker when the backing paper is removed.

To install one removes the opaque backing paper, thus exposing the very sticky side of the sticker. Then you apply the entire sheet of application tape to the wall with the sticker still attached. Followed by thorough smoothing with the included white squeegie.

Preparing the Surface

The high-quality special adhesives used in Tonky Stickers create an excellent bond with just about any clean, smooth, weather-resistant surface that is free of grease, dust, or any contaminates. For a long-lasting bond, the target surfaces must be properly prepared. Before mounting the material, clean the surface with isopropyl alcohol and wipe it dry with a clean cloth. Isopropyl alcohol is recommended as the cleaning agent as other agents may, under certain conditions, attack the paint or reduce the adhesive strength of the film. Gas bubbles may form between the film and the surface if any solvent residue remains as a result of improper cleaning or if paint on the surface is too fresh. We recommend that freshly lacquered or painted surfaces should be allowed to stand for at least three weeks after complete curing before adhering the film.

Placement/Preparation

Prior to application you should decide where your sticker will go. Use masking tape to hold the sheet to the wall so you can step back and judge its position. Some like to use a level along the top edge of the sticker, while others prefer to choose their own angle of rotation. Hold up you thumb like an artist and make your final decision. Using a pencil lightly mark the position of the two top corners.

Removing the Backing Paper

Lay the sticker on a flat surface with the application tape side down. Always draw the backing paper from the application tape, never the other way around. Using your squeegie scrape the areas where the sticker fails to transfer to the application tape.

Application

Pick up the sheet at the two top corners and pull the tension out. Match up the corners to the pencil marks press the sheet firmly to the surface at one corner. Then adhere the other corner. Then run the squeegie from top to bottom down the middle of the sheet. Then use overlapping strokes from the center out, alternating between the left and right side. Center>Right. Center>Left. Center>Right. And so forth.

Finally carefully peel the application tape away exposing you bold colorful Tonky wall sticker. Be certain that all pieces and extremities of your sticker adhere to the wall. If they fail to as you slowly pull back the application tape, reapply that section and use your squeegie to ensure adequate contact.

Bubbles, Folds, and Such

Bubbles are a regular occurrence. Using a small pin lightly poke bubbles and squeeze out the air with your thumb or squeegie.
Minor folds and creases can result from sub par installation and can usually be worked out with the squeegie. If you made huge error and are totally miserable with the results please contact us at info [at] tonkydesigns.com to discuss a solution.

Notes About Smaller Stickers

With smaller stickers ranging in size from a few inches across to arms width, a good way to install is to match up the corners with your pencil marks and to work from the top down and from the middle out, using alternating and overlapping strokes. Squeegie the heck out of the thing. And pull away the application tape as described above.

Notes About Larger Stickers

With larger designs those who are less mechanically inclined may need professional assistance. Any sign company in your area that creates vinyl lettering for businesses or vehicles should be willing to install your sticker for no more than a hundred dollars depending on how nicely you ask. Of course we cannot guarantee someone else’s work. If you live in York City please contact us about custom installation quotes.

However, the material is forgiving and most will have no problem doing it themselves. For a large piece like the Cross Cut Saw you may consider one of two approaches.

The first involves two people at either end pulling the tension out of the sheet and matching thecorners to the pencil marks you made on the wall.

The second is a little more cautious. Instead of removing the backing paper with the sticker face down, just tape the whole thing up, right out of the package, where you would like it. Run a long piece of blue masking tape along the entire top edge. Using your thumbnail or the squeegie create a creese in the blue masking tape where it meets the top edge of the sticker sheet. This creese marks the vertex of a hinge. Then swing the whole thing up 180 degrees and fold the tape along the creese you made. Now you should be able to remove the backing paper while your helper holds the sheet in place. Once the backing paper is removed you may apply the sticker while scraping with your squeegie from the center out and the top down as described in the “Application Section.”
